Shelby Elementary Adopt-A-School Program

St. Andrew has "Adopted" Shelby Elementary School, 735 Ziegler St.  This inner city school is located in the Shelby Park area where St. Matthew UCC was located before it joined with St. Andrew.  We have some knowledge of the area and much interest in helping this school in which a very large percentage of the children come from poverty level homes.

We support Shelby Elementary by:

  • Providing school supplies and uniforms
  • Volunteering in the classrooms
  • Assisting teachers with classroom materials
  • Tutoring children in the school
  • Working with the Family Resource Center as needed
  • Helping with special evening activities at the school
  • Provide hats and gloves for Christmas

There are many volunteer opportunities at Shelby Elementary.

Volunteers are assigned duties by each teacher and generally include:

  1. Reading to a child or children
  2. Listening to a child read to you and helping them with problem words
  3. Helping children learn the alphabet and to recognize the letters
  4. Helping children learn to count and to recognize numbers
  5. Helping children learn to add and subtract
  6. Helping children with crafts
  7. And generally assisting the teachers as needed

Our goal as volunteers in the classrooms is two-fold: To enhance the learning experience of the children and to be a Christian adult mentor to all the children.

If you would like to volunteer for any of these activities or have questions or suggestions regarding volunteering, please contact Ruth Sickbert or any of the other Community Outreach Team members.
